EAED confers first Innovation Award in collaboration with Joerg Strub Foundation

COPENHAGEN, Denmark: At the 30th Annual Meeting, which was held under the theme of “Prognosis: The key for longevity” from 2 to 4 June in Copenhagen, the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED) has introduced an award to honour clinicians and researchers for their novel work in the field of aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry. The Innovation Award, as well as this year’s newly incorporated poster exhibition, is part of the association’s efforts to expand the academic focus of the event, the organisers said.

For the award, which was sponsored by the Joerg Strub Foundation, a jury nominated three finalists from the range of poster presentations at the event. According to Prof. Aris Petros Tripodakis, immediate past President of the EAED and coordinator of the poster exhibition and the award competition, posters eligible for inclusion in the competition were those that presented a research project containing original data, an inventive clinical or laboratory procedure or instrument, or a clinical case managed according to an innovative treatment plan.

In order to compete for first, second and third places, the three finalists presented their papers on the main podium in a 10-minute lecture, followed by a short discussion. EAED members subsequently rated their presentations based on four criteria: innovation (50 per cent), academic content (20 per cent), coherence and creativity of the presentation (15 per cent), and the presenter’s delivery (15 per cent).

The final assessment resulted in the first prize going to Dr Aiste Gintaute from Germany, for her research, “Accuracy of computerized and conventional impression-making procedures of multiple straight and tilted dental implants”. The second prize was given to Dr Marco Gresnigt from the Netherlands, who presented a paper titled “Marginal quality of lithium-disilicate laminate veneers, as a function of cement viscosity and excess removal method”. Drs Georgi Iliev and Dimitar Filtchev, both from Bulgaria, won third place with their presentation “Dental software for personalized smile design—VisagiSMile”.

The winners received prize money of €3,000, €2,000 and €1,000, respectively, from the Joerg Strub Foundation.
