KINGSTON UPON HULL, UK: A Greek man who fled the UK in 2014 after having been charged with fraud and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) while working as a unregistered dentist appeared in the Kingston-upon-Hull Crown Court last week. He will remain in custody, pending a trial later this year, the General Dental Council (GDC) has reported.
Ronnie Barogiannis was recently arrested in Sweden and extracted to the UK under a European arrest warrant.
He is facing charges for fraud and ABH of various patients he treated under the name and registration of an individual whose information he obtained while employing him in Scotland.
Barogiannis reportedly worked at a Hull practice for over a year, from August 2013 to October 2014, and received almost £50,000 for his illegal work.
Eight patients were left with permanent damage to their teeth as a result of his actions, the GDC said.
Barogiannis fled the UK after being interviewed by Humberside Police about the allegations.
He has meanwhile denied the charges of ABH, but admitted to fraud.
“This is a case that demonstrates just how severe the consequences of illegal dental practice can be for the victim,” commented Francesca Keen, Head of Illegal Practice at the GDC, on the case. “We urge anyone who suspects there is illegal activity happening to contact us so we can investigate.”
